Feldenkrais

ImageThe Feldenkrais Method is a revolutionary mind/body learning system developed by leading physicist and martial arts master Dr Moshe Feldenkrais (1984-84) to help people embody their full potential.

The Method is not about stretching or strengthening, rather it cleverly works with the nervous system to organize new patterns of movement throughout the body as a whole. Students learn to become “aware” of their habits of moving. By a process of gentle play and discovery, students learn new ways of using their body that lead to more easeful, pain-free and dynamic movement.  This learning of new options not only enables students to regain the joy of movement that they had as a child and to perform better in all areas of their life, but can also free up new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

Key benefits:

  • reduce pain and stiffness (eg back/neck/knee/hip/shoulder pain)
  • recover from injuries
  • move more easily and freely
  • improve a particular activity (eg sitting/golf/gardening)
  • learn to relax and de-stress
  • improve athletic and artistic performance
  • overcome child learning difficulties
  • sleep more easily
  • improve neurological and musculoskeletal disorders
  • reduce teeth grinding and TMJ problems;
  • rehabilitate after a stroke
  • make childbirth more easeful
  • regain physical and mental functions lost through ageing
  • conquer depression, anxiety and low self-esteem
  • improve memory and concentration

There are different types of Feldenkrais classes.

Functional Integration

The practitioner works with the student one-on-one by gently placing their hands on the student and helping their nervous system to learn new patterns of movement.

“Awareness Through Movement”

Taught to a group of students by a practitioner who gives instructions verbally (like in a yoga or pilates class).

At Vinaka Wellbeing we are running regular Awareness Through Movement Classes. These are taught in small groups, so that individual attention can be given to every student. The lessons are generally done with the eyes closed, lying on the floor, so that the student is immersed in their own experience; and it often feels like a private lesson. The lessons are very gentle and fun.
